    Booth D15

Born in Chengdu, China in 1943, DIAO moved to Hong Kong in 1949, and in 1955, he left for New York, where he came to settle down and obtain his bachelor’s degree in philosophy. David DIAO is deeply influenced by New York’s abstract painting trend in the 1960s, and he has been striving to expand the limitations of the abstract forms. He came to create conceptual painting that is emblematized and features intellectual debate and self-reflexive qualities. In late 1980s when postcolonial issues became ever more heated, DIAO also began to dissect his own subjectivity as a Chinese immigrant and artist in the West, in the way he analyzed the iconic artists. In the series about Da Hen Li and Hong Kong, he employs the materials and images from his families as well as the celebrity image such as Bruce LEE to trace his childhood memory in Chengdu and Hong Kong. Along the way, the construction of his own culture and ideology is re-examined as well. For David DIAO, his painting is concerned with process art rather than something mysterious. As he said, “If what you’re doing can be reconstituted by the viewer, you’re dealing the viewer into the image.”

  • CHEN Wenji

    Booth D15

Born in Shanghai in 1954, CHEN graduated from the Printmaking Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 1978. Later he held teaching positions in CAFA’s Printmaking Department, Folk Art Department, and Mural Painting Department until he retired in 2014. He currently lives and works in Beijing and Yanjiao, Hebei. In the past 20 years, just after he turned 50, his understanding of life, living, social existence and art has undergone fundamental changes. As a result, he has consciously shifted to a more simple and concise form of expression in his works, while maintaining his passion for geometric shapes. In this regard, CHEN explains: “Expression should not be dictated by a particular formula. It is not a process of conformity, but a process of understanding and feeling.” He believes that the function of art is not limited to the reproduction and reinterpretation of objects. What he wants to convey with his works is more about his personal wonderment about the world. As such, he doesn’t want his creations to be a mere relay of knowledge, but to give people an element of uncertainty or a hidden possibility—the source of reflection.

  • Benrei HUANG

    Booth D15

Benrei HUANG believes that all creatures on Earth are only a small part of the universe. Although the course of nature and life are beyond our control, optimism and a fighting spirit may be our only way to give meaning to our existence. As such, HUANG’s works often emanate a hint of sadness and helplessness yet at the same time filled with warmth and humor. Though personal, her works contain emotions that are universal to us, and thus they become a mirror of our own experiences, and from them we are able to see a bit of ourselves. Benrei HUANG brings out humor in her creations through unique contrasting elements. In the limited-edition sculpture series We are the mischievous yet still protected on display, I am SUPER FUZZY sees a pair of makeshift angel wings made from leaves, while I am NOT YOUR ANGEL sees the bunny donning an orange superman cape.

  • LIN Yen Wei

    Taipei Dangdai [ Salon ]

The photograph-esque visual representation of LIN Yen Wei’s paintings reinforces the sense of unreality, as his personal duplicative interpretation in the form of painting deliberately dilates the psychological distance with real objects to create a subjective narrative.

  • CHENG Po-Tsung

    Taipei Dangdai [ OVR ]

For CHENG Po-Tsung, the numerous small paintings of the same size, all named Untitled, are like his personal visual diaries. His painting style is characterized by abstract expressionism deriving from the vivid expressiveness of the shapes and writing-esque brushwork and lines. In the flowing blocks of color and brush strokes, he narrates what’s running through his mind that belongs solely to him and documents the inner landscape of his life experiences.
